Without this association, logs quickly become isolated messages that are difficult to connect.

2. Context Information for the Request

In addition to the identifier, a concise but meaningful context is needed. This includes relevant business variables such as tenant, product, region, or key input values. The goal is not to repeat every parameter of the request. Instead, it is to capture the information that is essential for understanding the situation and performing further analysis. This helps teams identify which customer group, scenario, or use case is affected.

3. Metadata for Error Cases

In case of an error, additional details are needed to classify the issue. This includes distinguishing between expected and unexpected errors. An expected error might occur when no matching record is found in a database. Unexpected errors typically point to systemic issues, such as a broken driver or library. Log entries should include enough metadata to make this distinction without describing the entire technical environment.

Many other aspects are better captured through metrics and traces. Aggregated values such as latency, throughput, or error rates belong in metric systems. Detailed analyses of request flows across services are far more efficient through tracing than through large numbers of individual log lines. When these signals are combined effectively, logs can remain lightweight while still providing essential insights.

For FinOps, this creates a double benefit: log volume decreases—reducing analysis and storage costs—and the logs that remain become more meaningful because they are well structured and can be reliably correlated with other monitoring data.
